If you had asked me this question a few years ago, my answer would have been completely different.
Today I respond with another question:
Do we actually want to?
And my answer is a resounding NO.
Anxiety has been — and still is — without any doubt one of the most valuable tools in my life, and also one of my greatest teachers.
For so long I carried this anxious feeling in my belly that I genuinely didn’t know what life would feel like without it. I even remember wondering whether it was normal, whether other people felt the same constant background tension.
The most challenging period of my life, when I was struck by panic attacks almost every other day and my body produced one unfamiliar sensation after another, ultimately taught me some of the most important lessons I have ever learned.
I discovered — and continue to discover — just how strong and resilient my body really is.
I also came to recognise the essential protective role that anxiety plays in my life.
It became the catalyst that finally brought me closer to my own body.
Do you know what happened when I started paying attention to and acknowledging the emotions I had ignored for so long?
Moments of profound peace unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
Suddenly, stress was no longer just in the background — I understood that these feelings were the catalysts that allowed me to reach new levels of resilience and face whatever life brings. At least, that's how I see it today.
Anxiety: The Master That Helps Us Build Resilience
I believe anxiety is our body’s alarm system.
It exists for a reason — to protect us — not to harm us.
So why would we ever want to completely get rid of something whose only purpose is to keep us safe?
When I look back at those years of panic attacks, constant fear and unrelenting anxiety, and remember how desperately I tried to eliminate it…
not only did it not work — it actually made everything worse.
What we resist, persists.
By fighting anxiety, I was neglecting the very emotions it was trying to bring to my attention.
Emotions need space.
They need to be heard and acknowledged.
Only then can they fulfil their purpose and move on, which is often referred to as 'letting them go'.
Anxiety Is Past. Anxiety Is Future. Anxiety Is Never Present.
Research shows that our bodies make very little distinction between emotional reactions to past events and anticipated future ones.
We can feel those emotions as vividly as if the events were happening right now.
The past
Recall a joyful moment — a hug from someone you love, a party, a wedding, a holiday.
Your body recreates the same chemistry and brings back those exact feelings.
I can still feel the warmth of a hug from my parents, even though they are no longer here.
The future
The same thing happens with anticipation.
Planning a trip or an exciting event can make you happy weeks in advance.
As a kid I loved playing football — simply knowing there was a match on Saturday was enough to fill me with excitement, joy and energy all week long. Everything else barely mattered.
The principle for past and future works exactly the same way with negative emotions.
That’s why, once we understand that anxiety is always about the past or the future, we gain the power to consciously choose how we want to experience the present — simply by paying attention to it.
Anxiety is the guide that points us toward the emotions that still need to be acknowledged.
When we give them space, hear them, and work with them, they can fulfill their role and move on.
Only then has anxiety completed its job — and it leaves with them… until the next time we need it.
So I ask again:
Would you truly want to get rid of anxiety?
